This is a series of conceptual portraits of our molecular composition. Captured in photographs, these works explore the relationship between scientific knowledge, philosophy and contemporary constructs of our identity.
Science and philosophy have a long collaborative tradition going back centuries where light based scientific explorations and metaphysical considerations brought a new way of seeing that entirely changed our understanding of the natural world and encouraged us to consider the nature of our being.
The light that returns each night draws together the themes of light, science and philosophy in its investigation of our existence. Using specimens of Durvillaea species, biophysical descriptions of our molecular architecture are rendered through light and lens based projections, each a chance experimental outcome. Through this photographic experimentation the specimens transition into a sculptural form that is the biological imperative upon which our physicality and existence is dependent. Here knowledge transcends from evidentiary scientific purpose to a visual and poetic expression of what we are.
In an age where we have a incongruous relationship with science, The light that returns each night (my unfolding) offers a way to embrace scientific knowledge and opens up to us the reality and significance of things beyond our immediate perception. Through these images we are encouraged to contemplate the essential role that scientific discovery plays in extending a vision of what we know and who we may find ourselves to be.
